Short CV

Andrea Giammanco got his PhD in Physics by Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa, Italy) in 2003, where he also started his postdoctoral career before moving to UCLouvain in 2005.

Employed since 2007 by FNRS, where he is currently a Senior Researcher, working at CP3.

Specialized in High Energy Physics (HEP), expert in data analysis, machine learning, particle simulations, tracking detectors.

Member of the CMS collaboration at the LHC accelerator at CERN, where he held senior management positions including the coordination of the Simulations Group and of the Top Quark Physics Analysis Group, and chairing the CMS PhD Thesis Award Committee. Former member of the ALEPH collaboration. One of the developers of DELPHES, the most popular open-source parametric simulation in HEP.

Since 2017, Giammanco is interested in "muography", i.e. usage of cosmic-ray muons for imaging of large objects.Leader, with E.Cortina, of the Portable Muography R&D project, which aims at simplifying applications of muography in contexts where logistics is particularly complex.

Member of the MURAVES collaboration, devoted to the muon radiography of Vesuvius (one of the most famous and dangerous volcanoes in the world), where he coordinates the simulations.

Member of the European project SilentBorder, devoted to the development of "muon portals" for cargo scanning at border controls.
