Brief Introduction of the 3rd USERN Congress: To Make a Difference with a Post-Congress PID Course

Having the slogan of “Science without Borders” always and forever, the USERN Congress in 2018 was held in the beautiful city of Reggio Calabria, Italy. First as the old friend of USERN and honorary speaker of the 1st PID School in Iran, and then as the hospitable host of USERN Congress, Prof. Giovanni Romeo accepted to support this great event by European School of Genetic Medicine (ESGM) in addition to hosting the Congress in the Universita Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria. Surprisingly, the program in 2018 was to have a forward change in the scientific program!

The Congress and Prize awarding festival was held on November 10th, 2018 focusing on the scientific theme “Interdisciplinary Science for Life and Peace”, where we met the USERN Prize Laureates and a number of senior top 1% scientists.

The program was then continued as post-congress PID Course from November 11th to 14th which provided attractive educational lectures and workshops for juniors who were interested in genetics, immunology and medicine. Importantly and as the USERN’s routine, the program provided a unique opportunity for juniors to present their experiences as USERN junior presentations; this time as posters!

As a physician working mainly on Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases (PID), I do know that there is much to be done for improving the survival as well as the quality of lives of these patients, while early diagnosis together with the most appropriate therapeutic approach are the keys to increasing the patients’ survival. Putting an effort on this important issue, as an expected high prevalence of PIDs in Reggio Calabria, and as careful attention to such patients is required, we co-organized a course in PIDs together with the European School of Genetic Medicine (ESGM). May this effort in increasing the knowledge of the scientific world ends up in providing better care for these patients all around the world.
